For this family of six, their ranch home was no longer supporting the way they lived day to day. Limited gathering areas, a lack of room for guests, and the evolving needs of growing children left the home feeling increasingly constrained. While plans for a future custom home were already on the horizon, they weren’t ready to make that move just yet. Instead, they chose to invest in their current home, expanding its livable square footage within the existing footprint while updating outdated areas to better support this chapter of life.

The Home Base was conceived as a whole home renovation focused on functionality, flexibility, and long-term value. Rather than pursuing a major addition, the project centered on reimagining the existing home through strategic improvements, including a complete lower-level renovation and targeted updates throughout the main floor.

By bringing architecture, interior design, and construction together from the start, our team was able to evaluate the home holistically, ensuring every decision supported both the family’s immediate needs and their long-term plans. Reimagining 1,020 Square Feet Below

Before finalizing the lower level, our team developed two distinct layout concepts, giving our clients the opportunity to compare different approaches to recreation, storage, guest accommodations, and entertaining. This collaborative process helped refine the plan, ensuring the final layout reflected both their current priorities and their vision for the future.

Ultimately, the homeowners selected Layout B for its emphasis on connection and shared living spaces. The selected layout transformed 1,020 square feet of unfinished basement into a purposeful extension of the home, anchored by a spacious recreation room for movie nights and family gatherings alongside a dedicated play area for the children. A guest bedroom, full bathroom, exercise room, and expanded storage complete the lower level, providing the flexibility to accommodate everything from overnight visitors to busy weekday routines.

One of the home’s most creative design solutions is the dry bar nestled beneath the staircase, making purposeful use of every square foot while introducing a distinctive focal point. Deep evergreen cabinetry paired with warm honey bronze hardware makes a sophisticated statement, while open shelving, beverage storage, and a built-in cooler make the bar a natural destination for everything from an evening glass of wine to weekend game nights. Throughout the lower level, warm wood tones, comfortable furnishings, and integrated storage establish an atmosphere that feels welcoming, organized, and ready for whatever the day brings. What was once unfinished square footage is now one of the most functional and frequently used areas of the home.

A Fresh Perspective on Familiar Spaces

While the newly finished basement provided much-needed room to grow, the main level received a series of targeted updates that brought new life to the home’s overall character. Every improvement to the main level was guided by purpose, balancing meaningful renovations with carefully selected finishes to create a home that feels more cohesive, inviting, and functional.

Children’s bedrooms offer a unique opportunity to celebrate personality and imagination. As part of the refresh, each room was tailored to reflect the children’s interests, hobbies, and everyday routines, resulting in environments that feel playful, personal, and perfectly suited to this stage of life.

For the girls’ bedroom, an underutilized office was reconfigured into a spacious new bedroom by removing an awkward angled wall and adding a closet. The result is a bright, imaginative retreat filled with personality. Soft pink walls, whimsical wallpaper, and playful furnishings establish a sense of charm and creativity while maintaining a timeless foundation that can easily evolve as she grows.

The boys’ room introduces a more adventurous personality through rich navy walls, playful pops of orange, and astronomy-inspired décor that celebrates curiosity and imagination. While each room was approached differently, both highlight the value of designing around the people who use them. Practical improvements, playful details, and personalized finishes transformed each bedroom into a space that feels distinctly their own.
